Default Wastrel's Demise vs Worry

I was reading over (in some PvX wiki builds) that taking both Worry and Demise in the same mesmer is a bad idea. Is this because of energy concerns alone, or just that damage will be 'lost' if an enemy dies to one after paying the cost for both?

If only one is a good idea then which is better (considering things like hero AI?)

I don't know why they say not to take both because even though you can spam the skill you shouldn't do it, I think its because the wiki is read by everyone so the note is more aimed towards new or not so great player.

Personally I think it comes down to what you need too.

9 Damage over 5 seconds isn't the same as 45 damage when you cast a skill.
Demise is a more guaranteed damage even if that damage isn't that great. If it stayed for even one second you got something from it. Worry however is better when you can guarantee it will stay on.

As to which one to take I would say, if you are the only mesmer take demise if you have a second mesmer (especially if its hero) with some interrupts then take worry.

My Mesmer has Gwen in her team with a few interrupts can't remember if it's 2 or 3 right now, and she also has her two monks both with power drain. So you can see that with a team like this the enemy is going to have a hard time getting a skill off, soim very confident to take worry.

Edit: About the damage over time compared to the direct damage, I was saying that if your build has more damaging skills like cry of frustration and cry of pain then worry works well with that build, whereas if you your build doesn't have that much damage then demise might fit in better

i also think it's worth noting that hexes last for a shorter duration on bosses. making worry > demise in those limited situations. ie bring worry to fight abaddon, not demise.

In general I would say Demise is better than Worry; it is more reliable and has a higher potential damage output for a single cast and if use is perfect (i.e. enemies never use skills) then both Worry and Demise have 30 DPS at 15 Domination.
That said, when you can guarantee that it'll trigger, it's possible to spread several copies of Worry due to the shorter recharge. Worry peaks before Demise does too (i.e. you need to shutdown an enemy for longer than you do with Worry if you want Demise to outdamage it).

More spammable WW is probably better for most player builds, since it will give better DPS over time with things like Panic or Psychic Instability ensuring it finishes.

WD is generally better for Heroes, otherwise they will often spam WW and no other skills at all, which is what you don't want (Randomly, that is. Used well its just fine, but thrown around randomly its crap). Outside of Heroes WD is inferior in pretty much every way. The fact that it does damage from 0-2.9 seconds is irrelevant because of the fact that the damage is shit (if I wanted to see someone cast nukes that do 50 damage, I'll run an Ele). The only thing it manages to excel in is pure damage per cast, but that doesn't mean much when WW can just cast it on the enemy next. Maybe if you really can't stand the energy to spam WW then WD is better, but that should be fairly marginal, you are a mesmer after all.

Both together aren't that useful at all. For the most part, if you can ensure WW doesn't end then you can kill any group of enemies in about 5-7 seconds of WW casting. WW + WD at best only cuts that down to 5-6 seconds of casting (since it takes until the 5th second of WD to actually exceed WW you can't get lower than a 5s kill), so whats the advantage? Better to diversify into other damage skills instead of putting all of your eggs in one basket, just in case things go wrong and the enemy CAN use skills.

Thanks everyone for the great responses. I think I will go with WD for my heroes.
